Senior Director of Sales, Oncology/Hematology

Oncology has an information problem

There are more biomarkers, clinical trials, guidelines and treatments than ever before. But clinicians don't just need more information. They need practical guidance that helps them make decisions for the patient sitting in front of them.

Open Medicine is building a new clinical knowledge platform around Living Algorithms: interactive treatment pathways created by physicians and designed around how clinicians actually think and practice. Instead of static diagrams buried in PDFs, Living Algorithms make expert clinical reasoning accessible, interactive and up-to-date.

Our goal is to make the world's best medical expertise accessible to every clinician.

We're looking for a Senior Director of Sales, Oncology/Hematology to help us build the partnerships that make this possible.

The role

This is not a traditional media sales role.

You will work directly with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to develop partnerships around disease education, clinical decision support and physician-authored Living Algorithms. This role requires someone who understands how to turn a new idea into a partnership.

You will own relationships with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies across oncology and hematology, from initial outreach through proposal development, contracting, launch and renewal.

We're looking for someone who can open doors, understand what clients actually need and build partnerships that create meaningful value for the client and the medical community.

What you'll do

You'll develop relationships across large pharmaceutical companies and emerging biotechnology companies, working with stakeholders across:

  • Commercial

  • Marketing

  • Medical Affairs

You'll identify the right people, understand their priorities and create opportunities for Open Medicine to help them reach and educate clinicians.

Own the sales process

You'll manage opportunities from beginning to end. This means:

  • Identify and research prospective accounts

  • Develop relationships with senior decision makers

  • Conduct discovery meetings

  • Identify unmet needs

  • Develop customized proposals

  • Present partnership opportunities

  • Navigate procurement and contracting

  • Negotiate and close agreements

  • Expand and renew existing accounts

This is a hands-on sales role and you'll be expected to build pipeline, create opportunities and close business.

Sell solutions, not inventory

Open Medicine does not sell advertising or media placements. Our partnerships are built around helping clinicians understand increasingly complex treatment decisions.

This means every conversation starts with the disease and the clinical problem.

  • What is changing in the treatment landscape?

  • Where are clinicians struggling?

  • Where does practice vary?

  • What decisions are becoming more complicated?

  • Where could better clinical education make a difference?

You'll work with clients and the Open Medicine team to turn these questions into medical education programs built around Living Algorithms and physician expertise.

Understand the oncology landscape

You don't need to be a physician, but you should be comfortable discussing oncology. You should understand concepts like:

  • Lines of therapy

  • Biomarkers

  • Treatment sequencing

  • New drug launches

  • Indication expansions

  • Clinical guidelines

  • Community vs. academic oncology

  • Medical vs. commercial objectives

  • The role of KOLs and medical education

More importantly, you should be curious. When a new therapy changes the treatment landscape, you should want to understand why.

Build the commercial playbook

Open Medicine is brand new. This means you'll have an opportunity to help build the commercial organization, rather than simply inherit one.

You'll help us determine:

  • Which accounts to prioritize

  • Which stakeholders to approach

  • Which disease areas represent the greatest opportunities

  • How we position Living Algorithms

  • How we structure partnerships

  • How we expand successful programs across therapies and indications

You'll bring intelligence from the market back into the company and help shape our strategy.

Manage pipeline with discipline

You'll maintain a clear view of:

  • Target accounts

  • Active opportunities

  • Client stakeholders

  • Next steps

  • Proposal status

  • Expected close dates

  • Contract value

  • Probability of close

  • Revenue forecast

We are small and focused by design. We don't believe in bureaucracy.

But we do believe in knowing exactly where every important opportunity stands.

Represent Open Medicine

You'll represent us at major oncology and hematology conferences, including meetings such as:

  • ASCO

  • ESMO

  • ASH

  • EHA

  • Major disease-specific meetings

These meetings are important opportunities to develop relationships with clients, understand emerging treatment trends and identify new partnership opportunities.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who understands how oncology business development works.

Ideally, you will have:

  • 8+ years of sales or strategic account experience in oncology, hematology, pharmaceutical marketing, medical communications, medical education, healthcare media or a related field

  • Existing relationships within oncology and hematology pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies

  • Experience selling to Commercial, Marketing or Medical Affairs teams

  • A demonstrated track record of meeting or exceeding revenue targets

  • Experience developing strategic partnerships

  • Strong prospecting and new-business-development skills

  • Experience managing complex sales cycles involving multiple stakeholders

  • Excellent presentation, negotiation and communication skills

  • Strong understanding of the oncology marketplace

  • Experience working with advertising, media or medical communications agencies

  • Comfort operating in an entrepreneurial environment where the playbook is still being written

Experience selling medical education or clinical decision support is particularly valuable.

What will make you successful

You're curious

You want to understand why a client is launching a new therapy, why a treatment paradigm is changing and why clinicians might behave differently than expected.

You're consultative

You don't start a meeting with a rate card. Instead, you ask questions.

You understand the client's problem first, then determine whether Open Medicine can solve it.

You can create opportunities

You don't need to wait for an RFP.

You can identify an emerging clinical need, find the right person inside a pharmaceutical organization and create a conversation that didn't exist before.

You can sell something new

Living Algorithms are a new model for sharing clinical expertise.

That means prospective clients will not have a budget line called "Living Algorithms."

You'll need to help them understand where Open Medicine fits, why it matters and how it can help accomplish objectives they already care about.

You understand relationships matter

Oncology is a small world.

The best salespeople build relationships that last across companies, brands and careers.

We want someone clients trust enough to call when they're trying to solve a problem.

You like building

Open Medicine is not a large company with layers of sales management and established processes.

You'll have significant autonomy, but you'll also have significant responsibility.

If something isn't working, you'll be expected to help fix it.

Compensation and benefits

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $175,000 to $230,000 annually.

This role is also eligible for a target annual variable incentive opportunity equal to 50% of base salary, based primarily on achievement of individual sales and revenue objectives. This results in anticipated on-target earnings (OTE) of approximately $262,500 to $345,000 annually.

Open Medicine rewards exceptional performance. Our incentive plan includes accelerated commission opportunities for performance above target, providing additional earning potential for individuals who exceed their annual revenue objectives. Variable compensation is not guaranteed, and actual earnings will depend on performance.

Your actual base salary will be determined based on factors including relevant experience, demonstrated commercial performance, oncology/hematology expertise, geographic location and the scope of responsibilities.

Open Medicine also offers health benefits, paid time off, and other benefits available to eligible employees.

We believe compensation should reflect the impact you make today, as well as the company you help us build for tomorrow.

Why Open Medicine

Healthcare doesn't need another website with dense text in PDFs. There is already more information than any clinician can consume. What clinicians need is a better way to understand what matters, and apply it to real patients.

That's what we're building.

Open Medicine brings together expert physicians to make their clinical reasoning accessible through Living Algorithms. As oncology becomes more complex, we believe expert-driven decision support will become increasingly important. You'll be joining early enough to help define how the company grows.

You'll work directly with leadership, physicians and industry. You'll have the opportunity to build major accounts, influence commercial strategy and help create an entirely new category of medical knowledge.

If you want to help build something new, we'd love to hear from you.

Open Medicine is where leading doctors post Living Algorithms to share their expertise. Instead of static diagrams in PDFs, Living Algorithms are mobile-first, interactive and updated instantly as new clinical evidence emerges.

We make expert medical knowledge easy to access so clinicians can offer the best treatment for their patients.
