What if ChatGPT could ask an oncologist?

Open Medicine now connects with AI assistants including ChatGPT and Claude through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This makes it easy to find and use expert-authored clinical algorithms without leaving your workflow.

Once you've connected Open Medicine to your AI assistant, you can search Open Medicine algorithms and retrieve clinical content, flowchart data, references and supporting clinical analysis.

Why use Open Medicine with your AI assistant?

Clinical questions increasingly begin inside an AI assistant. Instead of leaving your chat window, searching Open Medicine and using copy/paste, you can ask ChatGPT or Claude to search Open Medicine directly.

For example:

  • @Open Medicine find algorithms for HR+/HER2− metastatic breast cancer; or

  • @Open Medicine what algorithms do you have for multiple myeloma?

Once you've found an algorithm, your AI assistant can retrieve the pathway and help you explore its clinical content, decision points, supporting evidence and references. Our MCP server supports searching our catalog and retrieving algorithms.

Here's the workflow:

Ask a clinical question → Find the relevant Open Medicine algorithm → Retrieve the pathway → Explore the recommendations and evidence with AI

How to install Open Medicine in ChatGPT

Once Open Medicine is available in the ChatGPT app directory:

  1. Open Apps in ChatGPT and browse the app directory

  2. Search for Open Medicine

  3. Select Open Medicine and choose Connect

  4. Return to your conversation and start using Open Medicine

After installation, you can add Open Medicine to a chat by typing @Open Medicine followed by your request. For example:

@Open Medicine find algorithms for EGFR-mutated NSCLC

Using "@Open Medicine" tells ChatGPT to use the Open Medicine connection for that request.

How to install Open Medicine in Claude

Open Medicine uses MCP, the same open standard supported by Claude.

  1. Open Claude and go to Customize → Connectors

  2. Browse the Connectors Directory

  3. Search for Open Medicine

  4. Select it and choose Connect

  5. Return to your chat window and ask Claude to use Open Medicine

What can you ask?

Once connected, you can easily interact with Open Medicine. Try questions such as:

  • @Open Medicine search for algorithms about metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma

  • @Open Medicine find algorithms for multiple myeloma

    • Retrieve that algorithm and walk me through the treatment pathway

    • What does this algorithm recommend for endocrine-sensitive disease?

    • What references support this part of the algorithm?

The Open Medicine connection is read-only. It searches the Open Medicine catalog and retrieves published algorithms but does not modify, create or publish algorithms. It also doesn't search the internet or other platforms.

Clinical expertise, available where you work

Open Medicine organizes clinical decision-making into practical, expert-authored treatment algorithms. Connecting Open Medicine to ChatGPT or Claude brings this structured clinical knowledge directly into the AI workflow you're already using.

No more having to switch between applications or manually copy/paste information. Just ask your question, tag @Open Medicine, retrieve the relevant pathway, and continue the conversation.
